Here's just a small sampling of where I’ve made an impact over the years.
Gamma Rho Lambda, Rho Chapter
Throughout my time at the University of Iowa, I found myself looking to make an impact - a way to leave my mark in Iowa City. Gamma Rho Lambda is an inclusive and progressive LGBT+ sorority on campus. I dove into this organization head first. Shortly after, I found myself in several leadership positions. I started off in the position for New Member Educator. It was my duty to teach the incoming members what it meant to be part of the Gamma Rho Lambda National Sorority sibling-hood. Shortly after that, I became Head of Recruitment. With this position I found innovative new ways to market and brand the chapter. By using those techniques, I helped triple the size of the chapter in just over one year. I quickly took on the role of Chapter President, as well as, Member Preservation Chair, New Member Educator, and Head of Recruitment. Handling this many leading roles at once sure was a challenge, but I took it in stride. This period in my life is what helped create my amazing organization and time management skills. In addition, these opportunities helped me grow as a leader and make ample progress with my ability to communicate efficiently and effectively.
Iowa Cancer Consortium
This was an opportunity of a life time. What started out simply as an internship, quickly grew and flourished into an amazing employment opportunity. I was originally asked to join the small team of 8 as their LGBT+ Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Intern. In this role, I partnered with the American Lung Association of Iowa and with Iowa Department of Public Health to produce and administer effective tobacco prevention advertisements targeted to the LGBT+ community statewide. In order to ensure each advertisements effectiveness, my team and I took six advertisements that we created and two advertisements created by the state to the public vote. We polled several LGBT+ friendly and popular areas across the state to evaluate the top 3 advertisements. The data we collected, through a Qualtrics survey I developed, helped convince key stakeholders to invest in our ad campaign and distribute our most popular advertisements across the state of Iowa. After a few months into my internship, I was offered the position of LGBT+ Health Equity and Disparities Co-Lead. I took on many opportunities in this role, one of which was co-creating Iowa’s LGBT+ statewide health assessment. This was done in an effort to collect data on the quality of and access to LGBT+ focused health care. I branded and marketed this at several Pride events throughout the state of Iowa as well as paired up with Iowa One to broaden our reach with this assessment. Together we reached over 100 LGBT+ identifying Iowans to help better their healthcare system.
Trilogy Behavioral Healthcare
I am currently employed at Trilogy Behavioral Healthcare. Here, I work as an ACT Recovery Counselor: Peer Support Specialist. I assist over 38 clients on their road to recovery from substance abuse, mental illness, and physical disabilities. On a day to day basis, I spend my time out in the community focusing on client’s key strengths to help them develop self confidence and independence. I regularly monitor and supervise medication distribution and packing to six or more clients daily in various neighborhoods of Chicago. Throughout my time here, I have developed strategical organizational techniques to improve team productivity by over 27%. I have also implemented several outreach and marketing techniques to bring the agency 20+ new clients. Trilogy has taught me what it truly means to be patient and understanding. My ability to be personable and effectively communicate has helped me make several breakthroughs with our most difficult clients. My supervisor and several other team leaders have told me that I am one of the best recovery counselors they have ever seen. This is an opportunity I will always be thankful to have had.
